Leadership styles
Great and difficult relationships
As managers, we can sometimes have great relationships with some of our employees, and difficult, even confrontational ones with others.
These different kinds of relationships often have a very damaging impact on how the team works:
- Imbalanced division of the workload between colleagues
- Tensions within the team that sometimes lead to a breakdown in communication
- A lack of motivation among some colleagues.
Leadership styles
We all have different ways of communicating and working. We all have our own leadership style and our employees also have different expectations when it comes to leadership styles.
When our own style fits in with that expected by our employees, the working relationship is easy. When they are different, collaboration can be difficult.

Leadership style, personality type and MBTI
These natural preferences are closely linked to our personality types. Understanding our own personality type and that of our colleagues helps us adapt our leadership style to suit our colleagues. To improve our leadership style and build a more effective team, we use MBTI (as well as a “simplified” – and optimised – version geared towards management, called the Keirsey Temperament Sorter) in our management training.
Four leadership styles have been identified. Each one is suited to particular personality types.
The leadership styles are:
